OEHHA Gets Ready to List Vinylidene Chloride as Known to Cause Cancer
California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has given notice of its intent to list vinylidene chloride as a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer for purposes of Proposition 65. It's also proposing to adopt a No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) for vinylidene chloride of .88 micrograms a day. Written comments concerning this proposed action must be received by OEHHA by 5:00 pm on Monday, Nov. 6.

Vinylidene chloride is used in the production of polyvinylidene chloride copolymers. These copolymers are used in many types of packing materials, as flame retardant coatings for fiber and carpet backing and in piping, coating for steel pipes, adhesive applications, and most extensively, in the production of flexible films such as cling-films for food packaging.

The Chanler Group represents citizen enforcers who, acting in the public interest, commence actions against businesses offering products for sale in California that contain chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm without first providing the health hazard warning required by Proposition 65. Citizen enforcers bringing Proposition 65 actions in the public interest may obtain a Court Judgment imposing civil penalties, an injunction requiring reformulation of products, and/or provision of health hazard warnings.
