UPI reports that a potentially cancer-causing dye was found in student uniforms for 21 schools in Shanghai, China.  The students, for the time being, may attend school in their regular clothes, while officials investigate the uniforms manufactured by the Shanghai Ouxia garment company.  A batch of the uniforms contains aromatic amine dyes, which are banned in China. The California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation issued Proposed New Flammability Standards for Upholstered Furniture, which would overhaul the State's decades-old furniture flammability standard, known as Technical Bulletin 117 (TB-117).  TB-117 led to the addition of harmful flame retardant chemicals--such as chlorinated Tris, a chemical known to cause cancer--in the foam padding of furniture and baby products.   The flame retardants in use to comply with TB... full text

During 2012, TCG clients Peter Englander and Laurence Vinocur initiated investigations into products suspected of containing the flame retardant tris phosphate--more formally tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP)--a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer. On January 25, 2013, the California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) issued a notice of its intent to list the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) as known to the State to cause reproductive toxicity. BPA has been used in reusable hard plastic water bottles and the linings of canned goods.
