Last Friday, Russell Brimer, Anthony Held, and Laurence Vinocur served 20 new 60-Day Notices of Proposition 65 Violation. The notices were served to companies offering products such as sunscreen, headphones, and glass mugs for sale in California containing chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm, without the required health hazard warning. Preschools and day care centers are full of toxic flame retardant chemicals, the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier this month. Brominated flame retardants and tris phosphate compounds have been linked to hormone disruption and lowered IQs, and are chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer.
Flame retardant chemicals have become widespread in our home and office environments, and it is unsurprising that they are present in preschools and day care centers as well.... full text

Thanks to TCG client Anthony Held, The ERGO Baby Carrier, Inc. (ErgoBaby) has agreed to reformulate all of its upholstered bassinets to virtually eliminate a toxic flame retardant. ErgoBaby and affiliated company Orbit Baby agreed earlier this month to remove the flame retardant tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) from the bassinets. Thanks to TCG client Peter Englander, Costco has agreed to only sell furniture from supplier Whalen Furniture Manufacturing, that virtually eliminates two toxic chemicals, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) and phthalate chemical di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (“DEHP”). TDCPP is a flame retardant chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, while DEHP is a phthalate known to the State of California to cause birth defects and reproductive harm. ... full text

Congress is making yet another attempt at reforming the decades-old Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), this time with the Chemicals in Commerce Act (CICA). CICA promises to improve public confidence in the safety of chemicals and facilitate interstate commerce. A new study conducted by HealthyStuff.org found that many university themed products sold at top retailers contained one or more hazardous chemicals, including arsenic, lead, bromine, chlorine, mercury, phthalates, and cadmium. The researchers found that university licensed products routinely exceed the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission’s standards for these chemicals, specifically for lead and phthalates.

Classic Concepts has issued a recall of Aman trunks, sold exclusively at Cost Plus World Market, because the surface coating paint on the interior metal chains contain lead in excess of the federal lead paint standard.
